JUNKYARDS

Junkyards are easy... or they aren't... This is one of those tricks that come REALLY easily to some people and is next to impossible to learn for other riders. It is a VERY linkable trick though- almost any trick that can be done on the back wheel can be linked into and out of junkyards. Dump-trucks, Decades, Fire Hydrants, Mega Spins, and Gerators are just a few examples of the links that are possible.

It is important that you know how to do endos and being comfortable with scuffing is a good idea.

It is pretty much REQUIRED that you have some sort of freecoaster on your bike.

Begin by rolling at a slow speed with both feet on the rear pegs- left pedal should be down.

Do a small endo holding BOTH brakes. As soon as the back tire hits the ground pull the bars all the way up twisting them 180 degrees to the right bringing the bike is vertical.

At the same time that you are bringing the bike up and twisting the bars take your right foot off the peg and twist your left foot (either by jumping it around or by pivoting) on the peg so that it is backwards. You should rotate your foot clockwise- toes toward the frame heel away. So that you are backwards on the peg.

The bike should continue all the way up until it is vertical and the left side of your body is pressed against the frame of the bike- actually against the head tube. Take your left hand off the bars for balance.

Continue to hold the back brakes until the bike is falling over vertical- This is the point where it gets hard. Put your right foot on the rear tire and scuff to keep your forward/backward balance. Initially you will probably be travelling in a straight line or slightly to the right. As you continue to scuff you will find that you will start to travel in a circle to the left.

Side to side balance is especially difficult since the bike is right up against your body- Take your time and this balance will be learned- It helps to pull the bike as close to you as possible with your right hand. Actually pull your right hand up so that the bars are at a 45 degree angle instead of flat.

To ride out, grab the back brakes with your right hand so that you stop. Grab the handlebars with your left hand and untwist them. As you untwist them switch your foot on the peg so that it is straight. Put your right foot on the pedal and ride away. For some reason this is harder then it sounds.

Junkyards aren't the most difficult trick in the world but they can be VERY unusual to learn. Don't be frustrated if the trick doesn't come to you right away. If you are having major problems with them and feel like throwing your bike in the garbage then move on to gerators, funky-chickens, or dump-trucks so you can practice scuffing. It is highly recommended that you be very comfortable with scuffing before trying this trick. Junkyards are one of the tougher standard scuffing tricks.
